The tragedies of September 11, 2001, sparked an urgency to renew commitments, to protect the public's health and to accept new challenges of mobilizing and strengthening community partnerships to prepare and, if necessary, to respond to public health threats and emergencies. The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District continues to make the development of emergency response plans to address the threats to homeland security a priority.
A major focus during the past several years has been to build capacity to prepare for potential disasters, whether they are naturally occurring, accidental or intentional. The health district's ability to better prepare public health response teams has been enhanced through the renovation of existing space into a training and redundant communication facility.
