School Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey
(SPAN) 2004-05 – Results for McLennan County
By: Ann Davis, MPH Epidemiologist

The School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Project is utilized to monitor overweight in Texas children. A representative sample of 4th, 8th, and 11th grade children were asked to participate in a survey that asked questions about nutritional choices and physical activity. Heights and weights were measured also. Researchers at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston developed the survey tool and provided direction on collecting and compiling data for the SPAN project. In 2005, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District applied for and was granted funding from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for the 2004-2005 School Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) Survey. The Health District was one of eight local health departments to receive funding to collect county-level data on the prevalence of obesity in children.
