The
Central
Texas Medical Reserve Corp (MRC)
Unit was inaugurated November 2007 and includes over 800 volunteers
in McLennan County. The mission of the MRC is to improve the health
and safety of communities across the country by organizing and utilizing
public health, medical and other volunteers. The Central Texas MRC
uses both medical and non-medical volunteers in its two main programs:
Volunteers In Preparedness (VIP) and
Community Health Ambassadors.
McLennan
County Volunteers In Preparedness (VIP)
For
the last two years we have had a public health emergency preparedness
volunteer program that recruited and trained volunteers for use
in case of a public health emergency; that program is McLennan County
Volunteers In Preparedness (VIP). Through the VIP Program, we have
recruited about 800 volunteers and trained around 200 people in
emergency preparedness skills.
We
will continue to use the VIP Program and it is going to be active
as the emergency preparedness volunteer program for McLennan County
within Central Texas MRC.
McLennan
County Community Health Ambassadors
Our
goal of the Central Texas Medical Reserve Corp is to continue to
recruit and train public health preparedness volunteers with the
VIP program; as well though, we want to broaden the scope of persons
who choose to volunteer with the Waco-McLennan County Public Health
District. To facilitate this goal of enlarging our volunteer base
we are beginning a new way for volunteers to become engaged with
public health: Community Health Ambassadors.
The
Community Health Ambassadors program will recruit and train volunteers
who will work in their communities as public health liaisons and
consists of two sub programs:
Health
Promoters and Health
Mentors.
